Our services

CVU is a Joint Venture (JV) between Colas, VolkerHighways and AECOM, delivering the Central London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC) for TfL.

We provide a fully integrated highways service including traditional highways maintenance services, emergency response, inspections, design services and the delivery of capital investment and existing asset renewal schemes.

CVU working for TfL and a number of London Boroughs provide a comprehensive site investigation, survey and repair service on footway maintenance works,  with many years of experience working for the public sector and Central London.

We offer a full design, construct and project management service on footway maintenance, improvement schemes, environmental improvements, shared and pedestrianised areas.  Particular attention is paid in the design and use of material in sensitive (areas of historical interest) and sensitive areas (public areas).

We work closely with local groups and aim to address the needs all sectors of a diverse London Community. As part of our commitment to the environment, we use recycled material were ever possible.

Highways Maintenance

CVU carry out all cyclic, routine and planned maintenance works across the Central area. Operating with a team of over 130 people from all three depots they carry out typically the following types of work.

Carriageway and footway defect repairs, emergency response, winter maintenance, roadmarkings, horticultural and arboricultural works, street lighting, gullycleaning and planned maintenance works together with associated traffic management. Along with the cyclic programme of works we have over 40,000 defects per annum to rectify.

Carriageway Improvements

Within the challenging environment of London’s busy and heavily congested  road network CVU surfacing teams operate throughout the central TfL LoHac area together with the provision of surfacing solutions to a number of London Boroughs.

Our dedicated in house design team identify and develop detail solutions to ensure Londons roads  are reconstructed to the highest standards and in-line with the clients requirements with minimal disruption to the travelling public and stakeholders. Our range of surfacing options including the more traditional surfacing treatments of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) and Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) as well as some of our more specialist surfacing treatments.

Our experienced and dedicated design and delivery teams utilise specialist equipment and our supply chain partner’s expertise to ensure the high level of quality and workmanship is achieved and maintained throughout our 250,000m2 per year resurfacing programme.

Network Management

CVU’s Network Management Team comprises of seven departments covering a wide range of activities including; safety inspections, permitting, licencing, asset management, programme management and the Network Control Room.

Our Network Control Room operates 24/7 to ensure a swift and appropriate response to any incidents so that CVU can quickly and efficiently clear any defects and ensure London’s roads are kept moving. The Network Control Room monitors the works that is being carried out to avoid congestion being caused and support the Mayor of London’s pledge to deliver journey time reliability.

The primary focus is the safety and wellbeing of all London’s network users as well as our own staff. Our permitting team ensure that any road-space we occupy is compliant with the Traffic Management Act and safely planned to minimise the risk to our staff.

Tunnel and Structures

Our work covers the design, build, inspection and maintenance of tunnels, bridges, underpasses, subways and retaining walls in Central London.

CVU are responsible for over 400 structures including four River Thames crossing bridges, Westminster, Lambeth, Vauxhall and Battersea. Along with the general maintenance and structural inspections to all our assets we also undertake various assessments and design for improvement schemes along with the scheme delivery on site. One of our first jobs within the contract was to repair/replace the cast iron facias of an arch span on Westminster Bridge.

CVU also maintain two tunnels, Upper Thames Street and Eastway for which we carry out the maintenance, structural inspections and improvements schemes to ensure the safety of the tunnels for the public.

Street Lighting

Here at CVU we offer a fully integrated Street Lighting department. As part of the LoHAC contract we carry out maintenance and cyclical activities on over 26,000 electrical assets. These can also branch out to specialist equipment such as high masts, decorative lighting and even architectural fountains.

Our team are fully accredited with the Highway Electrical Association (HEA) and also members of further professional bodies such as the Institution of Lighting Professionals.

We take pride in ensuring we provide a professional bespoke service specific to the client’s needs. CVU has been at the forefront of numerous energy saving initiatives including the conception of a retrofit LED tray for existing subway fittings, which allow up to 60% energy efficiencies and also creates a safe and brighter environment.

Traffic Signals Modernisations

CVU carryout Traffic Signal Modernisations within the central area for the LoHAC contract. This involves the upgrading of traffic junctions and pedestrians crossings to improve the technology and efficiency of traffic lights.

Due to the nature of highways maintenance the lifecycle of the signals is 25 years, this is a rolling programme and we will endeavour to keep our client’s equipment up to date. Signals modernisations also include ducting, new chambers, new controller exchanges and the work itself can be 24/7 due to the accessibility of working on the site high profile areas around London.

As well, CVU are looking at ways to improve safety and accessibility for the general public.
